About
Jihoon Kim (b. 2005) is a cellist from Atlanta, Georgia, currently studying at the Peabody Conservatory under renowned cellist Amit Peled. His playing is distinguished by a refined sense of tone and emotional depth, shaped by both a strong classical foundation and a developing personal voice.
Jihoon began his musical journey on the viola before discovering a profound connection to the cello, drawn to its rich, vocal character. Since making the transition, he has dedicated himself to cultivating a nuanced and expressive approach to the instrument.
He has received recognition in several major competitions, including top prizes in the MTNA Chamber Music Competition and the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, and was named a finalist in the Ronald Sachs International Music Competition. As a prizewinner in the DeKalb Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artists Concerto Competition, he appeared as a soloist performing Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor. His performance was praised by ArtsATL as “the most emotive work” of the evening, highlighting both his technical command and his sensitivity to tone and expressive nuance.
Jihoon performs professionally as a full-time cellist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra in Georgia. During his early training, he performed with leading youth ensembles including the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Emory Youth Symphony, and the GMEA All-State Orchestra. He has also participated in masterclasses with distinguished artists, including Wendy Warner, Lynn Harrell, Nick Canellakis, Gabriel Martins, and Johannes Moser.
Jihoon has attended festivals including the Brevard Music Festival and the International Cello Institute, where he further developed his artistry in intensive musical settings. In addition to performance, he has a strong interest in bow making and the traditions of French bow craftsmanship, as well as his approach to sound production and articulation.
As a performer, Jihoon is committed to communicating with sincerity and depth, striving to create meaningful connections with audiences. He continues to explore new repertoire and artistic directions as he develops his voice as a young artist.
Jihoon performs on an exceptional Carl G. Becker cello (1925), and plays on bows by Étienne Pajeot (c. 1820) and E. Bodach-Turner.
